Friday evening starting well for the Smoky Mountain High School Mustangs when the JV Girls galloped to a 54 to 32 point win over the junior Sugar Bears. The JV Boys struggled throughout the night but were able to battle back to make it a four point game with less than two minutes left to play. Having several opportunities at the foul line Pisgah was able to spread the margin of victory to 63 to 54.
In Varsity action the Mustangs starting line-up featured the senior girls including Hattie Ellis, Chyan Gallardo, Kaitlin Wood, Reanna Lehman, and Haley O’Neal. Leading the defense were Hattie Ellis, Kaitlyn Wood, and Shay Tisho who were able to contain western North Carolina’s premiere player Brook Allen to just 17 points. In the match-up between these two teams on January 8th Allen burned the Mustangs with 41 points including 29 in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs held the Pisgah Sugar Bears to 45 points which is the first time this season the Sugar Bears had been held to under fifty points. The 45 points was six points lower than the Bears have scored in any game this season. Aaliyah McCullom led all scorers with 22 points.
In Boys action The Mustangs took control early leading 27 to 15 at the end of the first period. Damon Ledford led the Mustangs with 32 points followed by Tommy Brennan who had 23 points including nine from three point range to lead Mustangs to a 91 to 67 over the Pisgah Bears. The Mustangs end the season on Tuesday at North Henderson.
